Many residents realize that our island produces only 10 to 15 percent of its food, meaning we rely on vulnerable transportation systems and are only a few days away from empty grocery store shelves should something go wrong.
Could Hawaii Island be self-sufficient in terms of food?
The Lyman Museum presents a series of five excursions to isle agricultural sites that explore Hawaii Island’s agricultural promise.
The first of five monthly van tours, “The Garden as Provider-Puna,” is on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Observe University of Hawaii at Hilo student research projects as the students work to improve animals and crops grown here.
Visit an organic farm practicing the methods of Master Cho Han Kyu, who teaches an age-old Korean cultural growing method internationally. Learn about Hawaii’s papaya industry and the GMO issue.
See tea and coffee growing, and enjoy sampling those beverages grown on our own island.
The following month’s excursion, “The Garden as Provider-Hamakua,” will be on Saturday, March 17. Other tours are “The Garden as Teacher” on April 14), “The Garden as Healer” on May 19 and “The Garden as Paradise” on June 16.
Each tour is from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and provides transportation, entry to activities and product sampling.
Most excursions provide lunch, and all tickets include same-day admission to Lyman Museum following the excursion.
Cost is $75 per excursion ($65 for Lyman Museum members).

Anthropologists Judith Kirkendall and Leslie Lang will lead the excursions. Kirkendall’s field is the anthropology of food and Lang, author of Exploring Historic Hilo, specializes in the anthropology of Hawaii and the Pacific.
The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawaii to tell the story of its islands and people.
